This is tape 17 from the 4-track cassette challenge (https://fawm.org/forums/topic/9813/).
It started with @pfoo recording drums on track 1, with @standup playing this thing on track 2:
Then @nancyrost added "airplane & cups" on track 3.
Weird indeed.
I usually write lyrics and vocals when I do the 4th track and there aren't any, but I had a hard time coming up with something. I tried to simulate a megaphone using EQ, lots of compression and a bit crusher, but I wasn't happy with it. Instead, I decided to add some guitar.
I mixed the song by sidechaining the drums and the guitar to give more space for @standup's instrument, and compressing @nancyrost's stuff to make it more even (the airplane was too quiet!).
Here's the result, I hope you all enjoy it!

Delightfully weird - especially being able to see the objects and instruments that were played to create this!
These 4-track experiments are always amazing. It's one of the coolest cultures of FAWM. It's cinematic. I can see a character waking from an alcoholic stupor not knowing where he/she is and trying to figure out what happened.
There are old obscure sci-fi movie posters on the wall of the Alamo theater, the movie theater I go to here in Brooklyn, and this sounds like it would fit right in with one of those movies. And what is that exactly @standup is playing?!?!
A long forgotten soundtrack floating though space. Psychedelic.
Weirdly rhythmic while oddly ambient at the same time. Cool collaboration.
Standup and I recorded our parts at the same time, which was hard without the normal musical cues. I like the additions - the clinking airplane and cup make me think of wind chimes, and the guitar gives some focus. Thanks for taking this on, @nancyrost and @elesimo!
This sounds like it was a lot of fun, it shows through @nancyrost nice use of airplane, the trim and yaw were right on point @standup I saw a pic of this in the forums...was glad to hear it ๐ I'll get around to listening more later. Great tracks!
Ok I love it when unconventional things get turned into instruments. This is wild. Such a cool use of different elements in forced limited capacity.
Damn, that cup sounds great! Really interesting soundscape here and real-drums-on-tape continue to be the best sounding thing everrrrr!
Very fun to hear how this turned out. I loved the drums and vague-o-phone on tape, and the melodic guitar really pulls it all together, gives it a focal point while keeping it weird enough!
Hell yes! It was not too weird after all...
Dang, this is great!!! Cheers to the weird, I say. Awesome ambient, soundtrack-esque, noise poetry. All the elements work so well together. I wanted it to go on a lot longer than it did! Totally enjoyed this one. Good job everyone on going outside the norm. ๐
This has an almost ominous feel at parts that plays off very well from the confident ongoing guitar.
Mega phone, take a cheap piezo contact pu: https://www.amazon.com/15Pcs-Trigger-... -- Bottom of an empty can, inside, outside, long, short, empty is best ๐ I got a cool tin pepper shaker (so looks like s mic? well, maybe not), -- mega phone, am radio mic, overdriven Harp mic... press it on your neck and play star wars... or is it trek? ๐ (Or buy a mega phone ๐ -- cheap on amazon too) $12 from Pyle, https://www.amazon.com/Pyle-Megaphone... Lovin' this brand of weirdness. I'm a big fan of ambient stuff. This certainly fits the bill with dissonance, crazy percussive elements, soaring melodic tones. Nicely done, all!
I love the unusual, dissonant feel of the piece. The drums pound out a sneaky, threatening rhythm whilst the guitar plays sustained drones, liberally using only a few notes. The feel is supplemented by the various non-musical sounds. I enjoyed my listen!
I was thinking "airplane and cups" ? That can't literally mean an airplane and cups - but I was wrong! Yes this is weird, but it's got some good pieces and tones in here. Waiting for the vaporwave remix!
One day I will learn how to mix four track tapes. I love the wacky space weirdness of this track. What the heck is that instrument @standup ?! Way to make it happen team fourtrack!! ๐
