The 17 saints

An uplifting and hopeful song

Current weather: 14°C (Partly cloudy)

Liner Notes

For this FAWM I wanted to challenge myself to write 14 songs in one session, using a small portable musical instrument that I've been using more and more: the OP-Z. The OP-Z is a drum machine, sampler, sequencer and synthesizer the size of a TV remote control, and I love how it enables me to quickly sketch out song ideas and write full productions.

In addition to the OP-Z, I also used A Korg "mini kaoss pad 2S" to add some effects to the OP-Z, including reverb, filters, and distortion. During January I practiced with the OP-Z and the Korg, trying to make at least a song per day.

I used Titular (http://muse.fawm.org/titular) to generate the titles for the songs, and it really helped my creative process since I tried to interpret the seemingly random titles. For "The 17 saints" I tried coming up with an uplifting and hopeful song.

I livestreamed my session to YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YnyxxMnXpA) in case anyone is interested in seeing the workflow with the OP-Z.

I like the baroque arpeggio (reminds me of Vivaldi's Winter) but might as well be a NES love song in a racing game soundtrack, if that was possible 😝

This is great with that nice driving bass layer. Makes me picture a guy walking alone in a big city, smiling and feeling hopeful. Cool!

Honestly after our Twitter discussion I was looking into the OP-Z and it seems really cool. Definitely will be listening to the rest of these

Definitely has a positive outlook to it! I'd expect something as you described to be overly quantized (I'm guilty of that a lot!) but there's some humanization here that adds to the positivity. Def gonna check out da YouTubes!

The synth swells at the start make me think a little of Robert Fripp's soundscapes. I like the synth arpeggios and the drum programming. The piano adds a nice bright touch. I can definitely feel an "uplifting" vibe on this!
